Robert Goodnough
January 3 - February 2, 2008

Robert Goodnough has been lauded by well-known critics, such as Clement Greenberg; art historians, including Martin Bush and Ken Moffett; and collectors William F. Buckley, Jr. and Edward Albee, as one of America’s most significant artists. His career, which has spanned more than fifty years, notably began in the period following the Second World War when Abstract Expressionism revolutionized American art. Having studied at Syracuse University with George Hess, who urged his students toward experimentation and Hans Hofmann, who impressed upon him the notion of expressive freedom, Goodnough was predisposed to experimentation.

Over time, Godnough’s work, influenced by the process of collage, developed toward a poetic quietude that coupled a cubist sensibility with volumetric elegance and a feeling of fluidity. Tremendously versatile, he nonetheless developed a personal style epitomized by the rhythmic movement of shapes across a two-dimensional plane.
